Karrueche Tran immersed herself in the world of Hip-Hop to prepare for her role in Lifetime’s film Terry McMillan Presents: Preach, Pray, Love, which premiered on November 8. She drew inspiration from Brooklyn rapper Lola Brooke to authentically portray Charlisa “Charlie” Jones, a platinum-selling artist with a troubled past and a sharp tongue.
Despite not being musically inclined, Tran embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. She explained to Celeb Secrets:
“I’m not musically inclined in any way, but it was a great challenge. I studied a rapper named Lola Brooke, I prepared myself, and I did it. I think I did a pretty decent job!”
The story follows Charlie as she adjusts to life after prison, performing community service under the supervision of Pastor Kyrus Owens, played by Mark J.P. The clash between her street style and his spiritual mission forms the emotional core of the film.
“I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to,” Tran said. “I was anxious because I wanted to do the character justice — but once I focused, I realized you can do anything when you really go for it.”
The film is directed by renowned author Terry McMillan, known for works such as Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
Summary: Karrueche Tran’s dedication to studying Lola Brooke helped her deliver a convincing and gritty performance as a rapper navigating life after incarceration in Lifetime’s new film.
