Dare to purchase Australia's most haunted house? Monte Cristo, a Victorian-era manor in Junee, NSW, is now for sale to a buyer fearless enough to overlook its chilling history.
Located 470 km southwest of Sydney, Monte Cristo has been surrounded by legends during its 140-year history. It is believed to be haunted by up to ten spirits. The manor is one of Riverina's most iconic estates and has functioned as a museum and tourist attraction, offering tours and overnight stays.
"I've had a hand on my shoulder," said Olive Ryan, who lived in the manor for 50 years. "I've had my name called when I've been here by myself. It's nothing to hear footsteps on the balcony and you go out and there's no one there."
Olive Ryan shared with The Project in 2015 that she sensed the presence of the house’s original owners, Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley, who reportedly haunt the estate since their deaths in 1910 and 1933.
Her son Lawrence, who spent his early years at Monte Cristo, also felt watched throughout his childhood.
Monte Cristo remains one of the most well-known haunted estates in the Riverina region.
"Monte Cristo is one of the Riverina's most famous estates and some think it's haunted."
Author’s summary: Monte Cristo blends rich history with eerie tales, offering a rare opportunity for a brave buyer to own one of Australia’s most haunted and iconic Victorian homes.
