Sam Smith has opened up about a difficult period early in their life when they underwent liposuction at just 13. The Latch singer described their childhood struggles with intense teasing, particularly during activities like swimming and changing in the locker room.
Smith recalled, "I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old, because I had a growing chest." They emphasized that the main reason behind the surgery was the severe teasing that made simple school activities unbearable.
"I was just getting so teased, I couldn't go swimming in school, and I couldn't — like, getting changed in the locker room was hell."
Despite the difficulties, Smith’s parents were very supportive, recognizing how much the situation was affecting their child’s well-being.
"They just saw how much it was crippling everything about me."
Smith also shared some of the physical and emotional struggles post-surgery. Although the liposuction was effective, it became a nightmare due to the bandage they had to wear during recovery.
"The liposuction, it worked, but it was also a nightmare because they gave me a bandage."
Smith explained that the bandage, wrapping their healing torso, ultimately complicated the whole experience.
Sam Smith’s early battle with body image and teasing highlights the long-lasting emotional and physical impacts of childhood bullying and the difficult choices made to cope.
