Singer Sam Smith shared that they underwent liposuction at the age of 13 after being harshly bullied at their Catholic secondary school in Hertfordshire for their weight. The decision, Smith explained, was driven by the intense teasing and discomfort they endured as a teenager.
“Weirdly, my weight was the thing I probably got teased the most about,” Sam said on Penn Badgley’s Podcrushed podcast.
Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses gender-neutral pronouns, said that while their queerness was something they could manage, their body image struggles were far more painful. Their parents were supportive of the surgery after seeing how much the bullying affected their child’s confidence and well-being.
“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. There were all sorts of reasons why, but mainly, I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming at school, and changing in the locker room was hell,” Smith recalled.
However, Smith noted that the liposuction didn’t solve the issue as expected, reflecting on their continuing love of food despite the early surgery.
