Bryan Brown hated English as a kid. One book changed everything

Bryan Brown’s Transformation from English Hater to Crime Writer

Bryan Brown had little interest in literature while growing up in Sydney. He disliked English classes, especially assigned classics like Great Expectations. Reflecting on his school years, Brown admits,

“I hated English at school. Because we got things like Great Expectations to read… not when you’re bloody 12 and 14 and 16, and you want to play sport...”

Despite this early aversion, a long plane journey inspired his inner storyteller, leading to a remarkable creative career. Now 78, Brown is instantly recognizable from iconic roles in TV and film, including The Thorn Birds, Breaker Morant, and Hollywood hits like Cocktail and Gorillas In The Mist.

Beyond acting, Brown has established himself as a successful author. He debuted with Sweet Jimmy, a short story collection published in 2021, followed by his first novel, The Drowning, in 2023. His third book, The Hidden, was released this month, marking his evolution into a respected crime writer.

We met for lunch in Melbourne’s Fitzroy while Brown was in town for a podcast appearance, a format he admits he has never listened to. He currently lives in Sydney with his wife, actress and director Rachel Ward.

“I’ve never listened to a podcast, ever,” he confessed during our meeting.

Bryan Brown’s journey from disliking reading to becoming a bestselling crime author highlights the unpredictable paths of creative passion.
