The Minnesota Wild scored on their first shot, setting the tone for a difficult night as the New York Islanders fell 5-2 on Friday at UBS Arena. The loss ended their five-game home point streak and highlighted their inconsistent execution.
“I don’t think we executed well at all,” captain Anders Lee said. “We were clearly off from the start. When we struggle to break the puck out and turn it over too much, it’s going to be a long night.”
The Islanders (6-6-2) struggled with poor puck movement and turnovers, allowing the Wild to take advantage through faster play and stronger forechecking. Goalie David Rittich made 21 saves but couldn’t prevent several defensive lapses.
“I think they beat us to a lot,” said Bo Horvat, who assisted Emil Heineman’s goal that cut Minnesota’s lead to 2-1 early in the second period. “They outworked us tonight. We’ve got to fix that by tomorrow.”
Any momentum from Heineman’s effort quickly faded when defenseman Brock Faber scored from the slot just over a minute later. The Islanders’ frustration showed as mistakes multiplied and the Wild stayed in control.
“I guess you have nights like this,” coach Patrick Roy said. “Sometimes you’re on, and sometimes you’re not.”
New York will try to regroup as they begin a seven-game road trip on Saturday night against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
The Islanders’ five-game point streak collapsed under sloppy passing, missed coverage, and turnovers as they fell 5-2 to the Wild before embarking on a tough road stretch.
