BONNERS FERRY — A former Boundary County jail employee faces an aggravated battery charge after allegedly assaulting an inmate in January 2023. However, formal charges were only filed in September 2023.

Case Details

A preliminary hearing for Bryan Brown, 37, is scheduled for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse. Two previous hearing dates were canceled for unspecified reasons. Brown’s bond was set at $50,000 and has been posted. He has not entered a plea.

The incident occurred on January 3, 2023, involving an inmate arrested by the Bonners Ferry Police Department who was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County. The victims’ names are withheld by the Herald in criminal reporting.

Affidavit Summary

According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff’s Detective Brandon Blackmore, the inmate was intoxicated and acted verbally abusive and uncooperative toward jail staff. After a heated verbal exchange with Brown, the inmate entered his holding cell.

“Brown shoved the man against a glass window inside the cell and struck him with a fist, causing his head to hit a brick wall in the cell,” the affidavit states.

The inmate tried to hold Brown’s arms to prevent further blows but did not physically resist otherwise. The affidavit further alleges that Brown grabbed the man’s throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall.

Legal Process

The case remains under investigation as court proceedings continue.

Summary: Brown faces serious charges after allegedly assaulting an intoxicated inmate during a 2023 jail incident, with court hearings ongoing and no plea entered yet.
