Purpose of the Emirates NBA Cup
This tournament was created to attract more attention to NBA games during a period when NFL and NHL are dominating sports viewership. At its launch on July 8, 2023, Commissioner Adam Silver stated:
“New traditions take time. But, all throughout sports, we are seeing new innovations, and now is the time for this NBA In-Season Tournament.”
Tournament Format
The event is structured in two main phases before the Championship game:
- Group Play Round: Lasting a month, teams compete within their groups.
- Knockout Round: Single-elimination games including Quarterfinals and Semifinals.
Schedule Overview
- Start: Friday, October 31
- "Cup Nights": Mainly Fridays throughout October and November
- Group Play ends: Friday, November 28
- Quarterfinals: Tuesday, December 9 and Wednesday, December 10
- Semifinals: Saturday, December 13
- Championship Game: Tuesday, December 16
Group Play Details
Each NBA team faces four group opponents once, playing two games at home and two on the road. All group matchups adhere to the regular season schedule.
