Rowan Dean mourns the passing of Graham 'Richo' Richardson, a prominent Labor power broker and Sky News Australia commentator, who died aged 76.
We learned with deep sadness the news of Graham Richardson's death this morning. Known simply as Richo by friends and foes alike, he was a dominant figure in Labor politics and later became an engaging, insightful, and outspoken commentator on Sky News Australia.
Richo played key roles in what became the most successful Labor government in Australian history. His political insights and expertise were unmatched.
I was honored to call Graham a friend. We shared not only intense televised debates but also many enjoyable lunches at his favorite spots around Sydney. For years, Richo and I debated fiercely on Paul Murray Live, clashing over left-right political issues.
"People were astonished when they would see Richo and I laughing and having a few beers together, convinced we were mortal political enemies."
This ability to engage passionately yet maintain camaraderie was central to Richo’s remarkable popularity and success. He was known to be ruthless and direct, describing himself as “a right bastard,” but these traits reflected the harsh realities of national politics.
"Yes, he could be ruthless, yes he could be forthright, yes he could be, in his own words, ‘a right bastard’. Such were, and are, the demands of national politics."
Graham Richardson was a formidable political force and beloved commentator, whose passion and candor left an enduring mark on Australian politics and media.
