Akash Mishra holds special memories of the Fatorda Stadium. In 2022, he celebrated winning the Indian Super League (ISL) title with Hyderabad FC here. More recently, he witnessed his current club, Mumbai City FC, stage a remarkable 3-2 comeback against FC Goa in the 2023-24 ISL Cup semi-finals.
However, one of these memories is tinged with pain. Early in the match, at the 13th minute, Akash suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for over 550 days.
“I wouldn’t want any player to suffer such an injury because only I know what I went through and how difficult it was,” Akash reflects.
His injury forced him to miss an entire season, which included important club and international matches. During his absence, India drew with Kuwait in the World Cup qualifiers, failed to defend their Intercontinental Cup title, and had an underwhelming Asian Cup qualifying run.
“Mentally it’s tough,” Akash admits, “when you watch other teams play while you’re sitting at home, doubts creep in: Will I be able to play again? And even if I do, will I be the same?”
Akash underwent surgery in May last year and completed his rehabilitation at the Assam High Performance Center in Kokrajhar. On 24 October, 551 days after his injury, he made his competitive comeback, helping Mumbai City FC secure a 4-1 victory over Sporting Club Delhi—the very same stadium where he had left on crutches a year and a half earlier.
Akash Mishra’s journey from injury heartbreak to triumphant return at Fatorda marks a powerful story of resilience and renewed hope for his football career.
