On October 24, 551 days after suffering an ACL tear, Akash Mishra made his comeback to competitive football. He appeared for Mumbai City in their 4-1 victory over Sporting Club Delhi, at the same stadium where he was injured.
“Playing for India has always been a dream since I started playing football. I have played for India before, and I am looking forward to doing that again after returning from my injury,” said Akash.
Akash Mishra cherishes Fatorda Stadium for more than one reason. He lifted the Indian Super League (ISL) title with Hyderabad FC there in 2022 and witnessed his current club, Mumbai City FC, complete a thrilling 3-2 comeback against FC Goa in the 2023-24 ISL Cup semifinals.
However, that match also marks a painful memory, as Akash suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in the 13th minute, sidelining him for over 550 days.
“I wouldn’t want any player to get such an injury because only I know what I went through and how difficult it was,” Akash told Sportstar.
The injury ruled Akash out for an entire season, erasing a vital year from his club and international football career. During this time, he had to watch India draw with Kuwait in the World Cup qualifiers, fail to defend the Intercontinental Cup, and experience a disappointing Asian Cup qualifying campaign.
Akash Mishra’s journey from a devastating injury to a triumphant return highlights his resilience and determination to represent India again on the football field.
