Buffalo Sabres captain and star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is stepping away from the team, head coach Lindy Ruff announced. There is no set timeline for Dahlin’s return.
The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn reported that Dahlin is returning to Sweden to be with his fiancée, Carolina Matovac. Matovac underwent a heart transplant over the summer after a serious health scare during travel in Europe.
“This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives,” Dahlin said, expressing gratitude for the support they received.
According to The Buffalo News’ Mike Harrington, Ruff shared that “things are going well” with Matovac, but emphasized the importance of giving Dahlin space at this time.
“Dahlin has got the support of everyone on this,” Ruff said, noting that “this is bigger than hockey.”
During Dahlin’s absence, it is expected that Bowen Byram and Owen Power will take on larger roles under Ruff's guidance.
Author's summary: Rasmus Dahlin is taking an indefinite leave from the Sabres to support his fiancée’s recovery after a heart transplant, with the team rallying behind him during this challenging period.
