As Google’s Stadia fades into memory, cloud gaming continues to thrive, and Sony is taking a significant step forward by expanding its support for the technology. The PlayStation Portal handheld, previously dependent on PlayStation 5 Remote Play, now gains native access to cloud gaming for all users.
The Portal resembles devices like the Steam Deck but traditionally required a connected PS5 to function. With this update, users can now stream games directly from Sony’s servers through the cloud, making the handheld far more independent.
Alongside the new cloud features, Sony has introduced several updates to the Portal’s software, improving both user experience and functionality.
“Starting today, all PlayStation Portal owners will be able to use cloud gaming on the handheld,” Sony announced.
The new cloud functionality requires an $18 monthly PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. This gives users access to the full range of PlayStation’s cloud gaming catalog in addition to their personal game libraries.
