The PlayStation Portal, a handheld console that has seen limited attention, is receiving a new feature: cloud gaming. Sony aims to enhance its appeal by allowing users to stream games without needing to be connected to a PlayStation 5 console.
The Steam Deck's success sparked interest in handheld gaming devices, emphasizing portability and flexibility — playing games anywhere from bathrooms to planes. By summer 2025, only 3% of PlayStation 5 owners had purchased a Portal, which depends on streaming from a PS5 and is not a standalone device.
Sony announced that PlayStation Portal users can now play select digital PS5 games from their own library via cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus, without the need for a PS5 to be physically connected.
"This update is most definitely warranted and nothing to complain about."
Access to cloud gaming on the Portal requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription — Sony’s top-tier plan costing $17.99 per month or $159.99 per year. For existing subscribers, this update transforms the Portal from a mere screen extension into a more versatile gaming device.
Sony's new cloud gaming support makes the PlayStation Portal more independent, but only for those willing to pay for the premium subscription.
This update significantly enhances the PlayStation Portal’s functionality, though the premium subscription cost remains a hurdle for widespread adoption.
