Joji has unveiled the third single from his upcoming fourth studio album, Piss In the Wind, set for release on February 6. Earlier this week, he released another track titled “If It Only Gets Better.”
“Past Won’t Leave My Bed” is a deeply emotional piano ballad co-written by Joji, Jonathan Xavier Cunningham, P.J.A. Williams, and producer Dan Farber. The lyrics explore Joji’s struggle with being haunted by memories of an ex-lover.
“In the opening verse, a lovesick Joji sees his ex wherever he looks. The only escape is sleep, and that’s fleeting.”
The chorus emphasizes his emotional turmoil, supported by fuzzy guitar chords intertwined with the piano. By the second verse, Joji reveals that his attempts to find comfort and move on are failing.
As Genius user @Hey_Its_Ion observes, the reference to lullabies connects to Joji’s 2020 track “Like You Do,” where he sings, “If you ever go, all the songs that we like / Will sound like bittersweet lullabies.”
The music video shows Joji trying to escape his pain by hitchhiking across the country and engaging in risky activities with questionable companions.
