Latest On David Kampf

Veteran center David Kampf has briefly stepped away from the AHL's Toronto Marlies to consider his future. Over the offseason, the Maple Leafs sought a new destination for Kampf, but no trade materialized. Consequently, he was waived during training camp, went unclaimed, and was assigned to the Marlies.

General Manager Brad Treliving signed the 30-year-old to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago, so this outcome was unexpected. The initial plan was for Kampf to anchor the fourth line, contribute strongly at the faceoff dot, and work on the penalty kill.

However, his role diminished last season under coach Craig Berube, and now other lower-cost players fill his former roster spot. This season, Kampf has appeared in only four of seven games with the Marlies as of the past weekend and did not dress for the road game in Chicago.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that Kampf is taking a couple of days to reflect on his future.

In recent years, several players have left guaranteed contracts to seek better NHL opportunities or to return to the league. Notable examples include Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina. Kampf may be considering a similar path, despite potentially forfeiting over $3 million owed to him in salary and signing bonuses across this and next season.
