Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment delivers a smart adaptation of Tears of the Kingdom mechanics, paired with an enjoyable cast and a strong campaign, making it a worthwhile spinoff. Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have successfully won me over through their various Warriors collaborations and spinoffs over the past decade.
What sets Koei Tecmo apart is how they don’t just insert fan-favorite characters into the Musou system; instead, they enhance the gameplay by integrating mechanics unique to the franchises they work with. This approach was evident in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, and now it shines again in Age of Imprisonment.
Leveraging the power of the Switch 2, the game offers better performance and stands as a worthy spinoff to the original excellence of Tears of the Kingdom.
Story and Setting
Building on the events of Tears of the Kingdom, Age of Imprisonment revisits untold stories, much like Age of Calamity did. This time, the focus is on the war between the first King of Hyrule, Rauru, and the Gerudo chieftain turned Demon King, Ganondorf.
Players familiar with Tears of the Kingdom will know the outcome, but Age of Imprisonment dives deeper into the narrative, highlighting Zelda’s efforts to reunite with Link in the future. The game gives more time and depth to characters who had only minor roles in Tears of the Kingdom.
Nintendo and Koei Tecmo have made a fairly loyal fan of me over the course of several Warriors collaborations and spinoffs this last decade and then some.
Instead, it is augmenting that formula with adaptations of the mechanics from the franchises it is handling.
Age of Imprisonment still tells us the in-depth story that saw Zelda strive to reunite with Link in the future.
