Ethan Hawke graces the Miami Film Festival GEMs red carpet
Award-winning actor Ethan Hawke’s first trip to Miami was far from a typical tourist experience. Instead of heading straight for the beach — though he admitted that was on his list — he appeared on the red carpet in an espresso brown suit and crimson glasses.
At this year’s Miami Film Festival GEMS, hosted at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, Hawke received the Virtuoso Award and joined Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh for a public discussion celebrating his three-decade career in film.
“You just want another chance to keep playing. I’m most interested in what I’m going to do tomorrow,” Hawke said.
Hawke’s first acting role came at age 14 as Ben Crandall in Explorers. Despite the film’s modest reception, he recalled feeling like a failure even when praised for his breakout performance in Dead Poets Society. Decades later, he reflects on his journey with gratitude and renewed enthusiasm.
His enduring passion for his craft shows that he continues to find inspiration in art, people, and life itself — a rare quality after more than thirty years in the industry.
