FAIR GAINESVILLE — Olivier Rioux, standing at 7 feet 9 inches, made his long-awaited debut for the Florida Gators against North Florida, becoming the tallest player in college basketball history.
In a dominant 104-64 victory, many in the crowd of approximately 10,065 began chanting, “Oli, Oli, Oli,” in support of the fan favorite, despite his not having played since arriving in summer 2024. Coach Todd Golden responded to the cheers when Rioux entered the game with 2:09 remaining, with UF leading 102-61.
“It felt great,” the 19-year-old Canadian said. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Though Rioux did not score or record rebounds, he etched his name in history as the tallest player to step onto the court, surpassing Kenny George, who was 7 feet 7 inches and played at UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008.
Rioux is a campus-wide curiosity, often approached for photos, autographs, and conversations. His teammates, especially his close friend Micah Handlogten, celebrated his debut.
“So much fun,” Handlogten said. “When he checked into the game, I stopped him and told him, ‘Play with confidence.’”
