A suspicious package containing white powder was delivered to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, leading to several individuals falling ill and being taken to a hospital, according to a report by CNN on Thursday.
The incident prompted an evacuation after one person opened the package inside a building on the base. Authorities established a safety perimeter around the affected area as a precaution.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” a statement from Joint Base Andrews said.
Several people were transported to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center for evaluation. The severity of their conditions was not immediately known.
Two sources familiar with the matter told CNN that the substance was an unidentified white powder. Base first responders determined there was no immediate danger and handed the investigation to the Office of Special Investigations.
An initial field test by the HAZMAT team did not detect any hazardous material, but authorities continue to investigate.
Joint Base Andrews, located outside Washington, D.C., is widely recognized as the home base for Air Force One, the aircraft used by the President of the United States.
