A number of people became ill at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after a suspicious package containing an unidentified white powder was opened, according to reports. The event led to building evacuations and an ongoing investigation.
The suspicious package was delivered to Joint Base Andrews, located outside Washington, D.C. After it was opened in one of the buildings, several individuals reported feeling unwell and required medical attention.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building at the base were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” stated Joint Base Andrews.
The building where the package was handled also houses the Air National Guard Readiness Center. Following the incident, affected personnel were taken to the Malcolm Grove Medical Center located on the base.
First responders at the base confirmed there were no immediate threats before transferring the scene to the Office of Special Investigations for further examination.
“Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations. An investigation is currently ongoing,” CNN quoted the military base.
