The San Antonio Spurs have started the season strong, but an important storyline has flown under the radar: the impressive play of forward Julian Champagnie, whose contract situation remains uncertain.
Champagnie stood out during a scorching preseason, hitting 19 of 30 three-point attempts. This performance helped him secure a reputation as one of the NBA’s best value players. Standing 6-foot-8, his blend of size and shooting ability makes him a key role player, especially due to his defensive contributions.
Although not a lockdown defender, Champagnie's length and agility allow him to effectively guard his position. He is also an above-average rebounder, ranking third on the Spurs with 6.4 boards per game. These attributes are rare and add significant value.
The Spurs signed Champagnie as a free agent midway through the 2022-23 season, then locked him into a 4-year, $12 million deal that summer. With only one guaranteed year left, an extension appears a pressing decision for the team.
“If he were to hit unrestricted free agency, then he could earn at least four times what he is making now, and the Spurs shouldn't let it get to that point.”
An ideal move would be offering Champagnie a four-year, $40 million extension to keep him with the team through the 2029-30 season, securing his services before other teams can bid aggressively.
Julian Champagnie’s unique skill set and contract status mean the Spurs must act swiftly to extend a valuable player before he commands a significantly higher salary as a free agent.
