'Operation Order' leads to downtown sweep by Calgary Police Service - LiveWire Calgary

Operation Order Sparks Downtown Calgary Police Sweep

On November 5, Calgary Police Service officers converged in the downtown area as part of "Operation Order," an initiative aimed at combating crime and social disorder. Officers from all city districts were briefed and deployed across key locations including East Village, Stephen Avenue, and Century Gardens.

Addressing Safety Concerns

The operation responded to ongoing public unease about safety downtown. Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan highlighted that violence against unhoused individuals, security personnel, social sector workers, and law enforcement has reached a six-year peak.

“This is not just about statistics. It’s also about how people feel when they walk through our streets, ride transit or visit public spaces, everyone deserves to feel safe in their city, and this operation will save lives.” — Chief Katie McLellan

Ongoing Commitment

Chief McLellan emphasized that the operation is more than a one-day action. The police service plans continuous efforts, including debriefings and evaluations, to maintain and improve public safety.

“Today just isn’t a one-day blitz. We will continue to do this going forward after today, we will debrief, and we will assess, and we will reassess. This just isn’t one and done.” — Chief Katie McLellan

As of 4:30 p.m., officers remained active in the downtown area to further the operation’s goals.

Author’s summary: Operation Order marks a renewed, sustained effort by Calgary Police to enhance downtown safety, focusing on reducing violence and restoring public confidence in city spaces.
